We are pleased to announce that Antoni Pieńkos, member of WISI staff, published a book entitled The European Defence Agency in the system of defense and industry cooperation in Europe. The publication is affiliated with the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the University of Warsaw, and was published by the Scientific Publishing House of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. It will be available soon on the publisher’s website under this link.

We wish to present a fragment of a publication’s review written by WISI expert Professor Stefan Markowski:

Purpose of the publication is to describe and critically analyze the history, organization and activities of the European Defense Agency (EDA); Assessment of the innovation of this relatively new European institution in context of the experience of industrial and defense cooperation in Europe and the prospects for its further development. The EDA is one of the most important initiatives arising from the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union, particularly from the part, which forms the basis of the EU Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). In this broader perspective of the EU security and defense policy, the EDA is an attempt to create an institution that aims to better coordinate European defense investment and related military equipment purchases by EU Member States, more effectively support the European defense industry, European military supply chains and European Technological potential in the field of defense and security. The need to strengthen European defense capabilities has become evident in the wake of the Balkan crisis, terrorist threats and European countries military operations alongside the United States in the Middle East and Afghanistan over the last 25 years. These operations showed quite clearly the military restrictions of European countries, the weakness of the European armaments industry and the rapidly growing technological advantage of the United States. [...] The basic thesis of the proposed publication is the assumption that EDA has the potential to become a new quality in industrial and defense cooperation in the EU and partly has the political background needed to realize this potential. The second thesis is the assertion that, despite this, the Agency is not able to fulfill its integration hopes. The proposed monography demonstrates the potential role of the EDA as a catalyst for deeper and more effective European integration in the industrial and defense field, as well as the various technical and decision-making problems that limit European industrial and defense cooperation.
